Guardian Rumour Mill

Scott Murray

Day four of the new year, day two of the new Rumour Mill, and already the new Newcastle thing feels long in the tooth. Zenit St Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun is the latest name on a shopping list that already features Lille defender Sven Botman, Atlético Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier, Everton’s Lucas Digne, Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, River Plate attacker Julián Álvarez, and south Devon utility man Thomas Cobley. We’re all going to have to get used to this quick-smart. It’s going to be a long month.

Meanwhile the fuss and furore over Romelu Lukaku’s love letter to Internazionale is giving cover to a couple of Chelsea defenders making a bolt for the door marked Do One. Andreas Christensen, out of contract in the summer, may leave for Barcelona in a cut-price deal, while Antonio Rüdiger is eyeing a move to Real Madrid but will consider Bayern Munich, PSG or Juventus should talks turn sour.

Barcelona also claim they’re in the mix for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, presumably having found a loose £200m down the back of that tatty old settee. Perhaps the Catalan paupers will raise the cash by offloading Ousmane Dembélé to Newcastle, whose latest mention may lock the Mill into a screeching feedback loop, so turn down your speakers and/or take out those buds you got for Christmas.

Barça are also hopeful of securing the services of Álvaro Morata, currently on loan at Juventus from Atletico Madrid, and offloading Philippe Coutinho, though that story is as old as references to Widecombe Fair.

Arsenal are in the mix for Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, whose dream move to Paris Saint-Germain has turned into, if not a nightmare, then a fitful sleep on a hot evening under nylon bedsheets. The Gunners are also reportedly close to a deal for Real Sociedad and Sweden striker Alexander Isak. Ainsley Maitland-Niles could pass him on the way out, heading for a loan spell at Roma, while Bukayo Saka fancies a move to Liverpool, it says here.

Manchester United want West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, and are willing to spend upwards of £100m for his signature. They’re also in for Barcelona and Uruguay defender Ronald Araújo, who is desirous of a pay rise at his current club but has yet to trouser one. Liverpool are also interested.

Watford plan to snaffle defender Samir from Udinese, and may send Christian Kabasele the other way. Two days down, then, 27 to go.

Gabriel Barbosa: West Ham hold talks over signing Flamengo striker nicknamed 'Gabigol'

West Ham are one of four Premier League clubs interested in Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa; Brazil international forward, who is nicknamed 'Gabigol', wants to move to England; Barbosa watches West Ham matches and is impressed with the job David Moyes is doing at the London Stadium

West Ham have held talks over the signing of Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa with the Brazilian, who is nicknamed 'Gabigol', keen on a move to England.

Barbosa is one of a number of strikers West Ham are looking at in this January's transfer window, although the 25-year-old is interesting three other Premier League clubs.

'Gabigol' has scored 104 goals in 147 games for Brazilian side Flamengo but wants to play in the Premier League as he feels it would give him the best chance to cement his place as Brazil's starting striker at this year's World Cup in Qatar. He has won 17 international caps to date, scoring five times.

The former Inter Milan forward watches all of West Ham's games and is said to be impressed with the job David Moyes is doing.

The Hammers are pushing for Champions League qualification with Moyes' side fifth in the league, a point off the top four while they are also looking forward to a Europa League last-16 knockout tie in March.

Yorkshire Post

Huddersfield Town cancel Ademipo Odubeko loan from West Ham United due to lack of game-time

Ademipo Odubeko has returned to West Ham United after an unsuccessful loan move to Huddersfield Town was cut short.

By Stuart Rayner

The 19-year-old joined on a season-long loan in January, but a lack of time on the field means it is in everyone's best interests that he returns to east London.

The Irish striker made just six substitute appearances for the Terriers, all from the bench. Four of them were in September and only two were for more than 15 minutes. His final (and longest) appearance came as a 55th-minute substitute at Barnsley in early December.

Coach Carlos Corberan has always spoken well of the youngster but Danny Ward has proven much more durable this season, appearing in 23 of 26 Championship matches this season, and scoring seven times. Fraizer Campbell has also struggled for game-time as a result.

Jordan Rhodes has recovered from the back injury which kept him out for more than two months.

And at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, when Ward was ill (but not with coronavirus), the Terriers went without any of them, playing Josh Koroma at the head of the attack.

It may be, therefore, that Town do not look to bring in a replacement for Odubeko.

With Pipa also making his comeback after injury over Christmas and Jonathan Hogg expected to return reasonably soon, they are in good shape, and are expected to loan out a few of their youngsters for more experience.

Having not played for West Ham this season, he is free to go back out on loan to another club, perhaps lower down the pyramid.

Linfield FC

Linfield FC confirms West Ham’s signing of Callum Marshall

Linfield FC can confirm that 17-year-old Callum Marshall has today joined West Ham United (subject to the completion of the international clearance formalities).

At the start of the season, Callum became one of the first inductees into the club’s innovative Scholarship scheme.

The purpose of the scheme is to prepare young scholars for a first team career, either with Linfield or as can be evidenced in the case of Callum, with a cross channel club.

Callum becomes the latest young player to leave Linfield for clubs in England, joining Dale Taylor who is with Nottingham Forest, Charlie Allen at Leeds, Josh Roney at Stoke and Ruairi McConville at Brighton.

Callum made 5 appearances (3 as sub) and scored once for the Linfield first team (in a League Cup win against PSNI in November). He also played in the Linfield Swifts team which lost 1-0 to Newington in the Christmas Day Seaview Steel and Sons Cup Final.

He leaves Linfield with the very best wishes of everyone at the club and hopefully, he can go on to carve out a successful career for himself at West Ham.

Linfield manager David Healy added his best wishes to Callum, as he embarks on the first day of his new career at the West Ham Academy.

“I want to wish Callum every success with this exciting new challenge that he’s now setting out upon. It’s a wonderful opportunity for him at such a leading Premiership club in West Ham United.

He’s been training with our first team squad all season and he’s made a very positive impression on all our players and staff.

We are sure he has the attitude and determination that will be required to make the most of this amazing opportunity that has come his way.

Everyone at Linfield is delighted with the recognition that both Callum and the club’s Scholarship scheme has earned and we will all be monitoring Callum’s progress with a keen interest.”
